When someone recommends you read a book that they have read, and they do so with pleading passion and conviction, when eventually you stumble upon this book gazing up at you from the low shelf of a bookcase, in some place, at some point in time when you weren’t really looking for a new book, you will revisit the moment when the person briefed you on this book and, recalling the fervency in their words, accept that you must take the book and begin reading it immediately. If it doesn’t play out this way, if no-one told you about the book, but you still feel as if it is begging you to pluck it from the shelf and take it with you, then that would make sense too. Because the most mystical thing about books is: we don’t choose the books we read, they choose us, often long before we ever read them, and they wait to present themselves, until the moment in our lives when we are ready to allow a fragment of them to remain with us.
